Module 5.2 - Prosperity with a Purpose

Why do you think people would be unmotivated by money in higher cognitive tasks? Journal about what motivates you to greater action and innovation? If money were no object, where would you pursue your purpose?

Think of an area of purpose that could motivate you. What’s an area of life where you’ve overcome hurdles? Or an issue in life that moves your heart? Do some research about this issue in your community. Make contact with an organization that works in these areas and learn more about how you might be able to help. Take one small step this week to look at a great purpose in your life.

I am not surprised because I have seen it firsthand. When people are given a quota and timeframe and sum of money, their creativity seems very manufactured. It's like artificial flavor instead of the real deal. It gets the job done, but it isn't what you want. I have seen it firsthand in my own life. When I have tied my creativity to some monetary value or even write a song for the purpose of releasing it to make money, I end up writing a crappy songs. My best songs are the ones written out of my raw and real emotions not intended to make money but just make me or my wife or whoever happy.

What motivates me is having a positive impact on people. If I can make someone's life just a small percentage better or give them some tool that will help them, I will be so fulfilled and want to continue to pour out. I would be a music artist, host a podcast, and mentor people trying to figure out their place in this world and evolving faith journeys. I'm working on a few of those!

One hurdle for me right now is just learning the world I am diving into. I have never made a podcast before so there are a lot of things to learn in that. I have never produced my own music to the extent that I am now, so I have to learn so much. I can see all of the small hurdles I have had to make it over to get to the point I am at now. I can celebrate that and still see that I am not where I want to be. Not that I want to arrive somewhere, but at least get to a minimum level of competence that I have not reached yet.

It feels like nothing else in the world matters. Time flies, and it energizes me. It makes my life exciting and propels me to become more creative and create something even more beautiful. It feels like freedom. It feels like joy.

Beyond meeting the basic needs of my family, money hasn't really motivated me much at all. There was a sort of "status" attached to a certain income level but the status was more important than the money. I was chasing respect and, in our society, people respect you based on your income.

I'm still struggling with what I can do in my geographic area - especially since we're now in an area where very few people are vaccinated and nobody is wearing masks. We had been spending time working out at the Y since they first reopened because they required masks and were cleaning constantly. They did an excellent job protecting their staff and members. But, when the mask mandates went away, they told everyone they could remove their masks IF they were vaccinated and EVERYONE stopped wearing them. Since the churches around here are still telling people that Jesus will protect them as long as they keep attending and, more importantly TITHING, I don't trust them. My husband had to drop a package off at Staples today and I watched a guy coughing walk in right after him. The Y was the only place I went where I saw people and now I don't want to go anymore.

There is a bit of empowerment in it this time, though. I'm choosing to step away, rather than being forced into quarantine.

I stay in the car or at home as much as possible. I'm tired of these people. Correction: I'm tired of the ADULTS and I feel so sorry for their children.

I learned a few years back that I am actually really excellent with young adults. I've also observed how many people have what I call "management trauma" from shitty managers in their formative working years. One of the hardest things to watch has been my own kids going out into the working world and being scarred by these shitty managers. People think "I deserve to be a manager because I've been here longer and I am entitled to the position" and, even worse, EMPLOYERS ARE GIVING THESE POSITIONS TO THEM! They are taking kids as young as 16 and literally scarring them for life with their shittiness and lack of leadership.

I feel like, just like churches with toxic leadership, management trauma is very real and has a profound effect on someone's working life just like religious trauma has a profound effect on people's lives. We spend more time at work than in church and not many people can choose to not go to work. It is soul crushing and I want to be someone who helps to stop it from ruining people's experience with work. We spend about a 3rd of our lives at work during a large portion of our lives. I don't think people realize how traumatizing it can be when your leaders are raging dickbags. I believe my purpose is to help those with this type of trauma and work with companies to teach leaders how to lead without causing this type of trauma.

How much better would our lives be if we weren't coming home stressed out because some asshole manager, who lacks leadership skills, didn't take their bad days out on us? I've noticed that, more often than not, when environments are toxic and the leaders decide to bring in experts - they bring them in to talk to the employees rather than the managers. They go into it like, "here, fix these people who don't know how to listen to us!"

I'm still trying to find out where I fit in the marketplace and the cohort is helping me to clarify my vision.
